The Louis Bunyan Memorial scholarship was started in 1993 to provide assistance to Coastal Villages Region Fund residents who wish to pursue careers (primarily in fisheries management, but also in other professions) and might not otherwise be able to further their vocational training or academic education because of financial need.

By increasing the educational and vocational achievements of the residents of western Alaska, CVRF hopes to enhance the long-term economic and social development of the Yukon Kuskokwim region.

Qualified individuals must meet the following criteria:
  • Must have resided in one of the Coastal Villages member communities and must be able to show proof of residency, and be a bona fide Alaska resident.

  • Must have been accepted into a relevant program of study at an approved/accredited institution preferably an Associate degree, Bachelors degree, or technical vocational program.

  • Exhibited strong academic skills or strong work performance, and be committed to completing their proposed program of study.

  • An interest in working for or already be employed by, an organization in the Yukon-Kuskokwim region is preferred.
